Tonight will see York play their first EFL match in over 10 years as they compete with Crawley for a place in the first round of the EFL Cup as they compete in the preliminary round.

Due to the number of English teams participating in Europe this season (who enter the EFL Cup in the third round) leaving the number of teams in the first two rounds unbalanced, for the second season in a row a preliminary round has been staged to ensure the right number of teams are in the first round.

The four teams in the preliminary round consist of the two promoted teams from the National League last season and the two lowest ranked non-relegated teams from League Two going head to head for the final two places in the first round.

York, who were crowned National League champions last season after amassing a record-breaking 108 points and securing promotion on the final day of the season, are being priced as odds on favourites to beat Crawley tonight.

The promotion saw the Minsterman end 10 years of playing non-league football, five of which were spent dwelling in the National League North (tier six) and achieving promotion back into the EFL after four years back in the fifth tier.

The Yorkshire side had been feeling optimistic heading into the new season off the back of a record breaking season, but their board recently made the surprising decision to sack their promotion winning manager just eight days before the start of the new season has sparked uncertainty among the fans.

Scott Lindsey was appointed last week as the man take the club forward, his previous job ending in being sacked from his second spell as Crawley manager in March this year after a 10-match winless run saw them drop to just a point above the relegation zone.

For Crawley, Colin Kazim-Richards was the man appointed to replace Lindsey in the midst of a relegation battle, and the former Fenerbahce striker secured their survival on the final day of the season, despite picking up just 40 points in the entire season.

The fans’ mood isn’t entirely encouraging for the Sussex side, who avoided back to back relegations and ending their 15 year stay in the EFL by the skin of their teeth, and with an unproven manager who has taken charge of just seven senior competitive games in his career.

The Red Devils are expected to near the bottom end of the table once again this season, but could spark optimism into their campaign with victory in the EFL Cup tonight.

The winner of tonight’s tie be drawn against Watford away in the first round the EFL Cup, which will be played on Saturday afternoon.

York head into tonight’s match as strong favourites following the two sides’ contrasting campaigns last time out, though with pressure on the new manager, who’s only been the position for a week, as well as the occasion, their first EFL match in 10 years, it could still be a cagey affair – perhaps a 2-1 home win seeming the most likely outcome.

York have become used to winning matches over the last couple of years, finishing second in the National League a couple of years ago before breaking their own points record last time out after accruing 108 points en route to promotion back into the EFL.

Ollie Pearce has scored 65 goals for York across the last two seasons in all competitions, and will be champing at the bit to make his EFL debut tonight as he looks to prove himself on the next level up.

Barker in the book

Crawley centre back Charlie Barker accrued 13 yellow cards last season, at least four more than any other teammate, with only two players in the entire division on the receiving end of more in the league last season.

The 23-year-old is expected to start for the Red Devils tonight and could have his work cut out for him, with Crawley expected to be on the back foot for much of the game.
