Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham’s injury timeline gets huge update

The New York Yankees received encouraging news Saturday as Trent Grisham moved closer to returning during an important stretch atop the American League East.

Grisham suffered a right hamstring strain while running the bases vs. the Toronto Blue Jays on June 13 and has missed time since. Boone continues to view the veteran center fielder as part of his plans because of his defense, left-handed bat, and ability to cover multiple outfield spots.

The timing matters for New York. The Yankees enter their upcoming six-game homestand with a one-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. With Aaron Judge still on the injured list, Boone’s club could use another experienced outfielder after going 4-6 over its last 10 games.

MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch shared the latest update Saturday on X, formerly Twitter, after speaking with Boone about Grisham’s recovery and the next step before his return.

“Trent Grisham is expected to be activated sometime on the homestand, Aaron Boone said. He will likely play in at least one Minor League rehab game.”

The update marks another positive point in Grisham’s recovery. A rehab assignment would let him test the hamstring through live at-bats, defensive work, and aggressive baserunning before the Yankees restore him to the active roster.

Before the injury, the 29-year-old outfielder appeared in 66 games and slashed .232/.341/.406 with eight home runs, 35 RBIs, and six stolen bases. His glove and late-game value have made him one of Boone’s trusted outfield options.

When the Yankees activate Grisham, he will strengthen the lineup and outfield depth as the schedule intensifies. His return will trigger a corresponding roster move, with rookie Spencer Jones standing as a prime candidate to return to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. As New York tries to hold off a surging Tampa Bay squad, Grisham’s recovery gives Boone a needed internal boost without forcing an immediate trade.
