Yankees make franchise history with offensive ineptitude vs. Red Sox
Cody Bellinger didn’t mince words about his offensive struggles versus the Boston Red Sox. Turns out he’s not the only member of the New York Yankees struggling. The franchise hit history for offensive ineptitude at Fenway Park.
New York hit a mark not seen since 1963: Going hitless through the first four innings.
Granted, Aaron Judge was inactive for NYY due to an MLB Injury. Giancarlo Stanton also wasn’t swinging at the plate either. But the offensive struggles lured out critics. Even Yankees podcast host Gary Sheffield Jr. became vocal online.
“Yankees hitters are six for their last SEVENTY ONE. Injuries or not this staff/roster should feel utter shame when they go to bed tonight,” Sheffield posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
However, one Yankees fan account pointed out a good omen about the 1963 mark: It came during one of the franchise’s World Series runs. Although the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed the trophy that season in sweeping the Yanks.
Meanwhile, Sonny Gray brought his home crowd to their feet with his performance on the Red Sox mound. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Gray struck out four different Yankee batters: Jazz Chisolm Jr., Spencer Jones, Oswaldo Cabrera and Jasson Dominguez.
Then Gray fanned Jones and Chisolm again to close out the sixth inning. Gray came after the latter through an array of heat from curve, sinker, sweeper, and turning to the sinker twice.
Chisolm ended up arguing the third strikeout called and eventually got tossed by the umpire.
