Yankees’ Aaron Boone sounds off on Ben Rice’s dugout gesture

Ben Rice is quickly becoming a fan favorite in the Bronx, and for good reason. The New York Yankees first baseman is having an unbelievable breakout season. The star first baseman has been arguably the team’s best player outside of Aaron Judge, and he’s helped the team navigate the sudden absence of their star outfielder.

Rice isn’t just leading the team in counting stats; he’s also becoming a leader off the field. One of the Yankees’ little routines they’ve been doing this season was a cheer they’ve done in the dugout after a teammate hits a home run. After Paul Goldschmidt hit a home run in one of those games, it seemed like the cheers were a little quieter than usual.

That prompted a reaction from Rice, who riled up his teammates in the dugout. A video caught the Yankees’ first baseman calling out his teammates for their lackluster reaction in his eyes. Manager Aaron Boone reacted to the video, saying that he liked the energy coming out of the star.

“I like that he called everyone out like that,” Boone said in an online interview. “Like, ‘Hey, let’s go.'”

Rice is having a stellar year on the plate for the Yankees. In his third year in the majors, the Yankees star has emerged as arguably the best first baseman in the league. He holds the best slugging percentage in the MLB with a .641 mark, batting .304 on the year with 18 home runs. He’s been an incredible player for New York as they continue their push for a World Series ring.

The Yankees are going to need more from Rice in the next few weeks. Judge suffered a rib fracture a week ago, and he’s out for an indefinite period of time. Boone has said that Judge expects to play this season, but only time will tell when he’ll actually return to the field. The Yankees are 40-26 and are currently tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the top seed in the AL East.
