Yankees’ Aaron Boone reveals what’s behind Spencer Jones’ success vs. lefties
The New York Yankees lineup has become notoriously lefty-heavy, and right fielder Spencer Jones, who is establishing himself as an everyday player in his first season in the big leagues, is another southpaw. However, Jones’ righty/lefty splits isn’t that debilitating for the Yankees to the point that they need to put him in a platoon. In fact, the 25-year-old is shining against same-handed pitching, and he took it one step further in their 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.
Jones began the night in the most ideal way possible. He tagged Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez for a two-run home run that set the tone for the Yankees in the top of the first inning, and New York never trailed in the game. He went 1-2 against Rodriguez with a walk, and even when the Angels deployed three lefty relievers, that scarcely did anything to slow Jones down.
Jones, against lefties Samy Natera Jr. and Sammy Peralta, went 1-1 from the plate with a walk. He’s now 14-35 from the plate against southpaws, which is good for a batting average of exactly .400. Suffice to say, the Yankees are very happy with what they’re seeing from the 25-year-old right fielder, and manager Aaron Boone shed light on what is fueling Jones’ success as of late.
“He’s doing great. He’s benefitting from his experience up here and applying it. I’ve talked about him having aptitude, and that’s what he seems to have. He’s taking the things he’s experiencing every day at this level and putting them into practice. He’s doing an outstanding job,” Boone said in his postgame presser, via YES Network on X.

Jones, on the season, now has nine home runs and 28 runs batted in on an OPS of .771. It speaks volumes to the trust the Yankees have in him that he was batting cleanup on Tuesday, and he did more than repay Boone’s faith in him.
