Wyndham Clark wins 2nd US Open, going wire-to-wire at Shinnecock

For the second time in four years, Wyndham Clark has won the US Open. He went wire-to-wire as the leader at Shinnecock Hills to take home the National Championship for the second time. A shaky front nine on Sunday brought the rest of the field back into play, but Clark steadied the ship late. He finished at 4-under par, just one shot better than Sam Burns.

Clark made three bogeys on the front nine, cutting his six-shot lead to just one. But an incredible birdie on the 10th followed by a solid par on 11 helped him steady the ship. Meanwhile. Burns’ lengthy putts stopped falling, which kept him stable at 3-under par. On the 18th hole, Burns had a putt to get to 4-under, and he barely missed.

Clark stepped onto the 16th tee with a one-shot lead and Burns in the clubhouse. He immediately wiped a driver way left into the native area, drawing a miserable lie. But a great recovery and a long putt earned him a birdie on the par five, sealing the victory. A bogey on the 17th was not enough to sink him, as an impressive two-putt on the 18th secured the win.

Burns has never won a major championship, but did come close last year at Oakmont as well. His putter is a superpower, and it got him painfully close to a US Open title on Sunday.

Scottie Scheffler played with Clark on Sunday, but could not put the pressure on his playing partner. Even as Clark could not find the fairway and was scrambling to save par, Scheffler could not make enough birdies. This was his first attempt at winning the career Grand Slam, and he finished T-4.

Tom Kim joined the party with a sensational 67 on Friday and stayed in contention at the US Open all weekend long. He made a birdie on 16 to close the gap to two, but immediately dumped his tee shot on 17 into a bunker. Kim’s previous best US Open finish was T-8 in 2023 at Los Angeles Country Club, which Clark won. He also matched YE Yang for the best finish in the championship by a Korean.

Keith Mitchell became the first player in US Open history to shoot even par in all four rounds of the championship. His T-4 finish is the best in his major championship career, having never finished higher than T-20.

Clark was not the fan favorite at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday. He spoke during the week about trying to move on from the Oakmont locker room incident, but the fans would not let him. Long Islanders were loud in their support of Scheffler and Burns, with some getting thrown out for heckling Clark. It did not rattle the champ, however, as he hit the shots coming down the stretch to win the championship.

The final major championship of the 2026 season is The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Can Scheffler defend the Claret Jug, or will Clark clip off another major title? Jordan Speith won The Open in 2017, the last time the event was held at Birkdale.
