Wyndham Clark gets real on ‘self-deserved’ US Open crowd reactions

Wyndham Clark won the US Open at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island on Sunday. It is his second US Open title and his second major championship, backing up his 2023 win at Los Angeles Country Club. But the New York fans were not behind Clark, mainly because of his antics in the Oakmont locker room last year. Clark spoke in his press conference about the fan reactions and his standing within the PGA Tour.

“It’s pretty rare to have fans cheer for bad shots. That was tough. But some of it is self-deserved. I kind of brought it on myself,” Clark said, per The Fried Egg’s Kevin Van Valkenburg. “After what happened at Oakmont, I was in a really dark place for two or three days. I felt everything — my reputation my world ranking — dwindling,” Clark continued.

Clark missed the cut at the 2025 US Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. After his Friday round, he caused damage to a locker in the club’s historic locker room. The picture of the damage leaked to No Laying Up’s Tron Carter, and the image immediately went viral. Clark did not immediately apologize for the incident and was reportedly banned from the club.

“I hope I don’t become the heel of the PGA. But if I am? Well… any press is good press, right?” Clark continued, per Van Valkenburg. The US Open may have served as his redemption story, hitting all the shots Long Island’s greatest test asked on Sunday.

Clark struggled out of the gate, making three bogeys on the front nine. But he shot an even-par 35 on the back nine to best Sam Burns by just one shot. He now joins an elite list of two-time US Open champions. Brooks Koepka also won his second US Open at Shinnecock, while Bryson DeChambeau was the most recent addition.
