WWE’s Roman Reigns to snap 616-day streak with historic AAA announcement

An exciting announcement has been made between WWE and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide: a tournament is being held to determine Roman Reigns’ next opponent after beating Seth Rollins at SummerSlam.

The winner of the tournament will challenge Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship during the Sep. 14, 2026, edition of Monday Night RAW, which will emanate from Mexico City.

This means that the “Tribal Chief” will compete on WWE TV for the first time since January 2025. There will have been 616 days since his last match on RAW by the time the bell rings on Sep. 14.

When was Roman Reigns’ last WWE TV match?

Reigns last competed on WWE TV during the RAW on Netflix premiere on Jan. 6, 2025. He defeated Solo Sikoa in a “Tribal Combat” match to determine the true “Tribal Chief.”

Before that, he hadn’t competed on RAW or Friday Night SmackDown since the Dec. 30, 2022, edition of the latter. He teamed up with Sami Zayn in a losing effort to Kevin Owens and John Cena.

Nowadays, the “Tribal Chief” usually only competes on PLEs. He will make appearances on the weekly programs like RAW and SmackDown, but since his return in 2020, he has wrestled less frequently.

Since he lost the Undisputed WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 40 in April 2024, Reigns has only wrestled 15 matches.

His most recent was at SummerSlam 2026. He put another one of his longtime feuds to rest with Rollins, beating him in the main event of Night 2.

Reigns and Rollins have a long history that dates back to their days in The Shield in the 2010s. For the most part, the “Visionary” has gotten the better of the “Tribal Chief.” However, Reigns was finally able to beat Rollins all by himself at SummerSlam.

It’s unknown where he will go next. He will have a challenger in just over a month on RAW for the World Heavyweight Championship, but it’s unclear whether or not he’ll defend the title at upcoming PLEs like Money in the Bank in October.
