World Cup manager quits with immediate effect less than three months into role

Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz has resigned from his position just hours after they were knocked out of the World Cup.

Queiroz had only been appointed as boss in April ahead of the tournament, but he now leaves after less than three months.

The Black Stars were eliminated by Colombia in the last 32 on Saturday night, with Queiroz announcing his exit on Sunday.

His side were beaten 1-0 by the South American side and now he has made the decision to move on.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Queiroz wrote: “To Ghana, football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn.

“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch.
Black Stars Success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.

“To my President and Board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honor and privilege to serve the Country and the Black Stars.

“To my players and staff, my deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team.

“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage.

“Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now.”

The Ghana Football Association are yet to confirm the news.

A short stint

Queiroz only took charge of five games as Ghana boss, with four of those coming at the World Cup this summer.

He won one of his five outings, drawing two and losing two.

The only victory of his short tenure came in the Black Stars’ opening game of the tournament against Panama.

Ghana won that game 1-0, going on to then draw 0-0 with England, in a game that included some controversy.

A loss to Croatia came after that, but it was still enough for the African nation to reach the last 32 of the competition.

As mentioned though, they lost to Colombia in their first knockout game, being sent home on Saturday night.

‘I hope he stays’

Queiroz’s decision to leave his position comes very soon after captain Jordan Ayew admitted that he wants him to stay.

The Ghana skipper said: “I hope he stays, I hope he stays.

“Personally, I just feel like he’s the right person to take us to the next level and the next step.

“I wish he could have had a better ending, but let’s see what happens.

“We tried our best with a new manager, new tactics, a new way of seeing football, so we need to just look at the future and stay positive.”

Unfortunately for Ayew, he hasn’t got his wish…
