- Jannik Sinner to win Wimbledon @ 1/2
Wimbledon Men’s Semi-Finals Preview
Four players remain in contention for the Wimbledon men’s singles title, with defending champion Jannik Sinner leading the way. The Italian recovered from a five-set scare against Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round before winning his next four matches without dropping a set.
Novak Djokovic has taken a more gruelling route, culminating in an incredible five-hour and 15-minute quarter-final victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime.
In the other half of the draw, Alexander Zverev produced an impressive straight-sets victory over Taylor Fritz to reach the last four, continuing his excellent form after winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open.
British wildcard Arthur Fery completes the semi-final line-up after an extraordinary run. The world number 114 is only the second men’s wildcard to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals after Goran Ivanisevic, who went on to lift the title in 2001.
Jannik Sinner vs Novak Djokovic
Sinner has dominated this rivalry recently, winning five of their last six meetings, including a straight-sets victory in last year’s Wimbledon semi-final.
Djokovic did gain revenge in a five-set Australian Open epic in January, but his quarter-final exertions could prove decisive here. The 39-year-old spent five hours and 15 minutes on court against Auger-Aliassime and played more than three hours longer than Sinner during the tournament.
Even for an athlete of Djokovic’s extraordinary conditioning, fatigue could become a factor against the world number one. Sinner can take advantage and progress in four sets.
Best Bet: Jannik Sinner to win 3-1 @ 12/5
Alexander Zverev vs Arthur Fery
Fery has produced one of the great Wimbledon stories, becoming only the second men’s wildcard to reach the semi-finals. The first was Ivanisevic, who famously went on to win the title in 2001, defeating Pat Rafter in the final.
The Croat was though an established threat in Grand Slam events and had previously been a three-time Wimbledon runner-up. Fery’s run is all the more remarkable given he had never got past the second round at SW19.
However, Zverev represents an enormous step up in quality. The German reached the last four with a commanding straight-sets victory over Fritz, ending a seven-match losing streak against the American. The American may not have been fully fit, but Zverev’s performance was impressive nonetheless.
Winning the French Open last month could also prove significant. After years of near misses, Zverev finally has a Grand Slam title in his trophy cabinet and the pressure surrounding his performances at major tournaments has eased.
Fery deserves enormous credit for his remarkable run, but facing an experienced and confident Zverev over five sets should prove a challenge too far. The German can dominate from the baseline and book his place in Sunday’s final without dropping a set.
Best Bet: Alexander Zverev to win 3-0 @ 21/20
Wimbledon Outright Winner: Jannik Sinner
Sinner remains the player to beat as he attempts to successfully defend his Wimbledon crown.
The world number one has recovered superbly from his opening-round scare, winning 12 consecutive sets and spending more than three hours less on court than Djokovic.
Zverev is a potential threat in the final, but Sinner’s recent Grand Slam record and proven ability on grass make him a worthy favourite. If he can overcome Djokovic, the Italian should have too much quality for either of his potential opponents in the final and retain his Wimbledon title.
Best Bet: Jannik Sinner to win Wimbledon @ 1/2
