Will Yankees’ Ben Rice miss 3rd straight game with hand contusion?
The New York Yankees are going for their fifth straight win on Wednesday against the Texas Rangers. They have the best record in baseball, have the blistering hot Will Warren on the mound, and have won 15 of their last 17. But the Yankees will once again be without Ben Rice, who is out with a left hand contusion.

Rice left Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles after fielding a Max Fried pick-off move. Tests came back negative, and Rice was diagnosed with a hand contusion. But as of Tuesday afternoon, he had not swung a bat since suffering the injury. Paul Goldschmidt will take his place in the starting lineup once again, hitting sixth.
Before the injury, Rice was one of the best hitters in the league. Even with his time on the sidelines, Rice is leading the American League in batting average and all of baseball in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS. The Yankees have won every game without Rice, but their offense is better with the lefty in the lineup.
Goldschmidt has been decent since the injury, picking up four hits in the three games and scoring two runs on Tuesday. The veteran was great early in the 2025 season for New York, and has picked up the slack with Rice on the shelf. That is why the organization brought him back for another year, and he has played that role perfectly.
The rest of the lineup is the same for the Yankees after their 6-3 win over Jacob deGrom and the Rangers. Jose Caballero remains at shortstop after the team chose him over Anthony Volpe at the position for the immediate future. Ryan McMahon is in the lineup and playing third base after a huge home run off of deGrom on Tuesday night.
With lefty Mackenzie Gore on the mound for the Rangers on Thursday, it may be another day until Yankees fans see Rice.
