Why there are warning signs for Lando Norris at the Miami GP while Oscar Piastri will find his groove

Formula 1 is finally landing back on our screens in Miami with unpredictable weather and bad omens, signalling what could be a weekend to forget for Lando Norris.

After the cancellation of the Middle East double-header, motorsport will finally arrive in the Sunshine state after a month-long break.

With readjustment to the regulations, this will be the first time the new-spec cars are pushed to the limit on track, and it’s going to feel like a brand-new season.

McLaren heads into this sprint weekend rumoured to have the best package upgrades and a strong history with the track.

The Florida hangover?

Miami will always hold a special place in Norris’ heart, as it was the Grand Prix weekend where he added his name to the history books as a Formula 1 race winner.

In 2024, the current world champion was running sixth in the early stages of the race, however, a safety car deployment at the midway point changed everything.

The Brit ended up leading the race, maintained the position and reached the top step of the podium on his 110th attempt.

Despite his great connection with the street track, there’s one thing standing in the way.

Out of the 11 circuits the driver has won at, he has never achieved a double victory at any of them.

Therefore, his win in Miami should theoretically dash any hope for the Brit to repeat his race win, as he has never won more than once at the same place.

After his maiden victory in Formula 1, Norris said: “About time! What a race. It’s been a long time coming, but finally I’ve managed to do it.

“I’m so happy for my whole team, I finally delivered for them. A long day, tough race, but finally on top, so I’m over the moon.”

He added: “A lot of people doubted me along the way. I’ve made a lot of mistakes over my last five years, my short career, but today we put it all together so this is all for the team.

“I stuck with McLaren because I could believe in them and I did believe in them. Today proved exactly that.”

Nine-goal omen?

Another positive sign for McLaren is that they have consecutively won around the Sunshine state as a constructor, winning in 2025 with Oscar Piastri.

One niche fact is that history shows that the only other time a Champions League semi-final match had nine goals, an Australian won the Formula 1 title.

That happened in 1960, with Jack Brabham claiming his second championship, winning five out of the ten races in the season.

The Champions League game that year featured Rangers against Eintracht Frankfurt and it saw a scoreline of 6-3 to the German side.

The only other time a semi-final has had a goal-fest like that was on Tuesday night when Bayern Munich faced Paris Saint-Germain and they scored a total of nine goals between them, ending in 5-4 to the French outfit.

With Oscar Piastri flying the flag as the only Australian driver on the grid, could this weekend be his first win of the season in his own bid for the championship?

Wet weather wildcard

Another element which could shake things up at the Miami Grand Prix is the weather, with thunderstorms currently forecast on race day.

The rain test for the new F1 car never took place at the start of the season, with the scheduled date cancelled due to the conflict in the region.

Therefore, multiple issues could crop up for the drivers as they head into the unknown.

However, innate driving ability usually rises to the top when the clouds open up – and that might be exactly what Norris needs to break his bad omen.

It should be considered that he is the only driver in history to have finished in P1 in a wet session in Miami, which was a rain-affected Sprint race last year.

Additionally, the 26-year-old won five out of seven of the wet sessions in 2025, showing his superiority in the wet.
