Why is there no World Cup game today? Tournament’s run of a match a day ends
There is not a single minute of World Cup football taking place today, and it’s for a very good reason.
After a few weeks of some of the best football action to be seen on the international stage, we are set for a break.

That is because we are approaching the end game, the final on Sunday, July 19, and with fewer teams, matches are more spread out.
The last-16 is over, and we are left with just eight teams remaining at the crunch stage of this World Cup.
Why is there no World Cup game today?
The round of 16 ended on Tuesday with Argentina’s game against Egypt and Colombia taking on Switzerland.
But given the intense schedule of the last four weeks, there is now one day off.
After that, it’s three days in a row of quarter-final action as we get closer to finding out who will win the 2026 World Cup.

The one day break comes to an end on Thursday with the first quarter-final.
The favourites France take on Morocco as the African nation look to reach back-to-back semi-finals.
