Hull City vs Manchester United LIVE commentary: Tigers depleted as Red Devils face Benjamin Sesko decision

Marcus Rashford could feature for Manchester United for the first time in 20 months in the opening lunchtime kick-off of the new Premier League season.

The Red Devils finished strongly last term with their former midfielder at the helm and start the 2026/27 campaign at newly promoted Hull City on Saturday.

Carrick was awarded the permanent managerial role at Old Trafford after securing a third-place finish and qualifying for the Champions League.

During the transfer window, United have recruited strongly in their midfield with the additions of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, while Carlos Baleba from Brighton is expected to follow.

Additionally, Marcus Rashford could feature for United in the Premier League for the first time since December 2024, following loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona.

The 28-year-old, wearing the No. 9 jersey, logged his first minutes back in a United shirt in a 4-2 friendly defeat to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan last Saturday.

Carrick has consistently referred to the England international as ‘our player’ and admitted it was ‘exciting’ to have him back.

Meanwhile, the Tigers will be hoping to mark their top-flight return after a nine-year absence with a victory – though survival remains a daunting task for any newly promoted side.

Hull beat Middlesbrough in the play-off final after Southampton were caught cheating and banished from the game after ‘Spygate’.

Team news for Hull City v Man United

United striker Benjamin Sesko is pushing to be involved having recovered from a back problem.

While the Slovenia international is expected to become the Red Devils main striker this season, Bryan Mbuemo, Matheus Cunha, and Joshua Zirkzee have all slotted in the position during pre-season.

Carrick faces a decision over whether to include Sesko from the start.

Matthijs de Ligt has returned to training but is unavailable for the Hill match.

The Netherlands defender has been sidelined since last November after undergoing back surgery.

Mason Mount is a doubt having picked up a hamstring knock in pre-season.

Providing an update, Carrick said: “We’re managing Mason a little bit, but he’s very close, so it’s touch and go for the weekend, really, if not, going into next week.

“He’s picked up a little bit of a knock, it’s no dramas. Maybe it’s been a week or so, or 10 days or whatever it’s been. So, it’s nothing major. Yeah, of course, he’s missed some football over recent years and he wants to be fit, he wants to be in that full rhythm and he wants to stay fit.

“So, we’re doing our best to help him do that, but he’s a top player, Mase. It’s the same as the squad, we’ve got to manage the squad, there are going to be injuries through the season.

“We have got to have a squad that’s strong enough to have a really good, top starting team with a depth to carry us through the season. Mason will be back very, very soon, if not immediately. So it’s all good.”

Hull have numerous injury concerns and the Tigers are not expected to be anywhere near full-strength.

Jack Butland, Eliot Matazo, Darko Gyabi, Oscar Zambrano, Charlie Hughes, Joe Gelhardt and Hidemasa Morita are unavailable, while Cody Drameh and Matty Jacob face late fitness tests.

Carrick expects a test

Carrick believes heading to Hull on the opening weekend is not a ‘favourable’ fixture.

He said: “It is a tough start. I think a newly promoted team away from home is a tough, tough game.

“I have been involved in them in the past, so I am fully aware of what’s at stake and what’s coming at us on Saturday, and what we have to be ready for.

“It’s not favourable. It’s an easy thing to throw out there but it’s pretty ridiculous. I’m not taking it that way at all.”
