Why is ex-Chelsea ace Carney Chukwuemeka playing for Austria?

England’s Under-19 European Championship winner Carney Chukwuemeka will be representing Austria at the upcoming World Cup.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder has cemented his place at his new club after completing a permanent move at the beginning of the season, following a successful initial loan spell from Chelsea.

It’s been a breakout year for the Austrian, who made 28 appearances and netting two goals in his second Bundesliga campaign.

The 22-year-old spent his international youth career with the Three Lions.

However, in March 2026, his request to switch allegiance to Austria was officially approved by FIFA.

He has now been called up for the country’s 26-man World Cup squad by former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick.

Where was he born?

The former Chelsea player’s eligibility to represent another nation stems from his birthplace, which was in Vienna, Austria.

Though born in the Austrian capital to Nigerian parents, he was raised in Northampton, England, where he progressed through the ranks at Northampton Town before moving to Aston Villa‘s academy.

Due to his heritage and upbringing, he was legally eligible to play for four different countries – England, France, Austria, and Nigeria.

Three Lions career

Chukwuemeka made his first appearance for England at U17 level and progressed through every age category, up to the U21s.

He captained the U19 side to a 2-0 victory over Italy and secured his first international goal at that level in a 4-0 win over Andorra.

Most notably, the ex-Aston Villa midfielder was selected for the U19 European championships squad in 2022.

He played in every game of the tournament, scoring a crucial extra-time goal in the final, which secured his inclusion in the UEFA Team of the Tournament.

Key players who featured alongside him in that squad were Jarell Quansah, who is representing England at the upcoming World Cup, as well as Premier League stars Alex Scott, Liam Delap and Tim Iroegbunam.

While Chukwuemeka was later called up to the England U21 squad for matches against Azerbaijan and Luxembourg, he was unable to feature in either match due to an injury.

FIFA rules behind the switch

Under FIFA’s new rules, a player can switch their international allegiance as long as they have not played more than three competitive senior matches for a previous nation before turning 21.

Because all of his appearances in a Three Lions shirt came at the youth level, he was free to choose his senior nation.

After his switch was accepted in March 2026, Chukwuemeka made his debut in a friendly against Ghana, scoring his first international goal in a 5-1 victory.

After the match, he said: “It’s a fantastic feeling. Not many words can describe this moment.

“When the ball hit the back of the net, I couldn’t believe it. I wanted to do it all over again immediately.

“I’ve felt incredibly welcome here. We got off to a great start, scored early, and just kept going. It feels more like a family than a team.”

Why did he reject England?

Ultimately, the decision came down to guaranteed first-team football on the international stage.

Despite becoming a rising star in the Bundesliga, the U19 Euro winner faced an incredibly congested path into the England senior squad, with superstars like Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice dominating the central midfield positions.

Now, the 22-year-old’s position is locked in Rangnick’s squad as they prepare for their flight to North America.

It will be the nations first international tournament since 1998 and will feature in a group alongside Argentina, Algeria and Jordan, with the players training at the University of California.
