Why Ian Happ doesn’t believe NL Central is ‘slipping away’ from Cubs
The Chicago Cubs have endured an extremely inconsistent season. While the Cubs could certainly still compete for a postseason spot, Chicago is currently in fourth place in the National League Central standings with a 34-32 record. The Cubs are eight games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the division. Nevertheless, Cubs star Ian Happ does not believe the NL Central is “slipping away” from the ball club, which is something he said during a recent interview with 104.3 The Score.
“I wouldn’t say slipping away,” Happ said. “Obviously for us, not where we wanted to be. Didn’t want to be looking up at it. The Brewers have played great baseball… I think for us, looking at the division standings, it’s not going to help. That doesn’t put us in a better spot.
“What we have to do is, we have to play better.”
The Cubs may look to make trades to improve the roster. The ball club has been impacted by injury concerns throughout the campaign. With that being said, the team has also underperformed overall.
Happ, 31, has had a fairly respectable season. The 2021 All-Star is hitting .232/.347/.485 to go along with 14 home runs, 13 doubles and two triples. The four-time Gold Glove winner has continued to make an impact in the outfield as well.
The Cubs need more than only Happ to play well, though. Chicago will need a complete team effort if they want to upset the Brewers in the NL Central.
For now, the Cubs are focused on their upcoming game against the Rockies in Colorado on Tuesday night at 8:40 PM EST.
