Who does Guillermo Ochoa play for now? Mexico goalkeeper equals icons at World Cup

Mexico legend Guillermo Ochoa will set a new record this summer by appearing in his sixth World Cup for his nation.

The veteran goalkeeper made his debut in the tournament in 2006 and he’s been called up to the Mexican squad in 2026.

And with his sixth appearance in the competition, he is going to share a record-breaking moment with two of football’s greatest.

Ochoa, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the first players ever to be selected for six World Cups.

So it’s going to be a historic summer for the Mexico legend, but it could end up being his last stint as a player altogether…

What club does Ochoa play for?

Ochoa spent last season with Cypriot side AEL Limassol.

He played 26 times for them after joining in September 2025, with 22 of those appearances coming in the league.

The 40-year-old kept six clean sheets and conceded 40 goals.

However, his contract expired at the end of May and he is yet to sign for another club, with his career potentially now coming to an end.

Ochoa told Mexican broadcasting network TUDN in April that he would be ending his international playing days after the World Cup, with his club career also called into question.

“Retiring is undoubtedly difficult, but in my case it won’t be so hard because I’ve enjoyed it for so many years, for so long,” he said.

“There comes a point when your mind and body say, ‘You’ve given it your all,’ and you leave peacefully, and that’s going to be my case.”

Ochoa’s Mexico career

Ochoa will retire from Mexico duty after a 21-year spell representing his country and picking up 153 caps.

He has the third-most appearances ever for the nation.

The goalkeeper made his Mexican debut in 2005 aged 20 and now he will be featuring at a sixth World Cup in 2026 aged 40.

When it comes to club football, Ochoa has played almost 800 matches, with 425 of those coming for Club America.

He also played 116 games for French side AC Ajaccio and featured 86 times for Belgian outfit Standard Liege.

As well as that, he had stints in Spain, Italy and Portugal too, but his time in Cyprus could end up bringing the end of his career.
