What surprised Eagles’ Vic Fangio about Riq Woolen steal after Super Bowl win

The Philadelphia Eagles are continuing preparations for the 2026 NFL season, and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio already appears encouraged by one of the team’s key offseason additions in cornerback Riq Woolen.

Speaking Thursday in comments shared by Ashlyn Sullivan of NBC Sports Philadelphia on X, formerly known as Twitter, Fangio revealed what stood out most about Woolen after arriving in Philadelphia following the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl LX victory over the New England Patriots earlier this year.

“He’s into being here.”

Sullivan also reported that Fangio expressed surprise that Woolen did not receive more attention from teams seeking a long-term deal during the offseason. Fangio reportedly praised the size Woolen adds to Philadelphia’s cornerback room and noted the former Pro Bowler has been consistently present throughout offseason activities since arriving with the organization.

Woolen spent four seasons in Seattle before joining Philadelphia. During the 2025 season, he helped the Seahawks capture the Super Bowl title while continuing to serve as one of the team’s primary defensive backs.

Riq Woolen expected to strengthen Eagles secondary after Seahawks Super Bowl run

Across 16 games in his final season with Seattle, Woolen recorded 41 total tackles, including 33 solo tackles and eight assisted tackles. He also posted one interception for 30 yards, defended 12 passes and added 1.5 stuffs for loss.

The Eagles are hoping Woolen’s addition can strengthen a secondary that enters 2026 looking for improvement after last season’s early playoff exit. Philadelphia was eliminated by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card round, leading the organization to continue reshaping its defense during the offseason.

Philadelphia’s organized team activities are scheduled for May 26, 27 and 29 before resuming June 1, 2 and 4. The team will then hold mandatory minicamp June 9-10 as preparations intensify for the upcoming season.

Fangio’s early comments suggest the Eagles value not only Woolen’s physical traits and production, but also his willingness to embrace the opportunity in Philadelphia following Seattle’s championship run.
