What Oilers’ Connor McDavid said about injury scare after Game 2 loss to Ducks

The Edmonton Oilers lost to the Anaheim Ducks 6-4 in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The series now heads back to Southern California tied at one game apiece. But the Oilers can breathe a sigh of relief, as Connor McDavid is downplaying the apparent lower-body injury he suffered late in the game.

“Yeah, I just rolled up on it a little bit,” McDavid said, per The Athletic’s Chris Johnston. “It’s fine.”

McDavid got tangled up with defenseman Mattias Ekholm as they headed into the defensive zone. The Oilers captain immediately pulls up and starts to limp toward the bench. He went right down the tunnel, missed six minutes of game action, and then returned to the ice.

Game 1 was the first game of the season where McDavid did not score, and the Oilers picked up the win. He was held scoreless in Game 2 once again, but Edmonton could not pull out the win. They were down 4-2 late in the second period when Zach Hyman scored to cut into the lead. Josh Samanski scored his first postseason goal to tie the game in the third period. But Cutter Gauthier’s second of the game secured the win for the Ducks.

The Oilers have won the Western Conference twice in a row, but lost to the Florida Panthers twice in the Stanley Cup Final. They have made a lot of changes in recent years, namely at goalie, and have championship expectations. Connor Ingram has been solid in the first two games, but he likely won’t be able to steal a game.

McDavid is one of the elite playoff performers in recent years, but does not have a ring to go with it. He will need to score goals and pick up assists for the Oilers to have any chance at getting back to the Cup Final.
