Michigan HC Kyle Whittingham says quiet part out loud about ‘huge’ extra second vs. Western Michigan

Kyle Whittingham is not pretending the ending of his Michigan debut was clean. Speaking after the Wolverines’ chaotic 13-12 walk-off win over Western Michigan, the first-year head coach openly acknowledged just how much the disputed extra second on the clock mattered in setting up Bryce Underwood’s game-winning Hail Mary.

“Well, yeah, obviously the extra second was huge,” Whittingham told reporters after the game. “As I watched the first Hail Mary end and the ball sailed out of the back of the end zone, as I glanced at the clock, I was pretty sure there was one second left, but that obviously is not up to me. But as the refs went to replay, they confirmed it and so gave us one more opportunity.”

That admission will only add fuel to a controversy that has already dominated social media since the final whistle. Underwood’s first Hail Mary attempt sailed incomplete as time appeared to expire, only for officials to put one second back on the clock after review. Given the second life, Underwood delivered a far cleaner throw the next time around, connecting with JJ Buchanan in the back of the end zone to seal the win and send the Big House crowd storming the field.

“And that second time around, Bryce threw a perfect ball because the first one he sailed it out the back, which gives us no chance to catch it,” Whittingham continued. “And J.J. made a phenomenal catch. It doesn’t surprise me that’s who he is. I see him make contested catches every day in practice. And offensive line gave Bryce enough time to launch it.”

Western Michigan entered as a 27-point underdog and had Michigan on upset alert for most of the night, with Underwood struggling to a 12 of 22 passing performance that included a lost fumble and an interception. A win would have ranked among the biggest upsets in program history, and Whittingham himself acknowledged the ending will be remembered no matter how people feel about it.

“So this game will go down in history, Michigan history,” Whittingham said. “I don’t know if it’s in a positive way, but it’ll go down in history for certain.”

With the win now secured, however controversially, Whittingham’s tenure in Ann Arbor is officially underway, and Saturday’s finish figures to be a talking point around the program for a long time to come.
