Bryce Underwood has regressed. Offense was tight with zero creativity. Looked like outdated offensive football.”

The critique came despite Michigan avoiding what would have been one of the biggest upsets in program history. Western Michigan entered as a 27-point underdog and pushed the Wolverines to the brink before Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan on a 47-yard Hail Mary as the clock expired, capped off by a disputed extra second that sparked outrage across social media. Underwood finished a rough night with just 12 of 22 passing for 170 yards, adding a lost fumble and an interception against a Western Michigan defense that had no business hanging around that long.

Cowherd’s larger concern points to Whittingham’s track record at Utah, where his offenses were often built around a strong running game and physical defense rather than an explosive passing attack. With five-star recruit Underwood now in his second season as the starter, expectations in Ann Arbor have only grown, and a stagnant offensive performance against an outmatched Mid American Conference opponent is not the kind of season opening statement fans were hoping to see.
