What exactly does a 76-team NCAA March Madness bracket look like?

With the March Madness expansion of 76 teams being unanimously approved by the NCAA committee, the bigger stage is looking more like a reality every day. As many head coaches have expressed being puzzled by the March Madness expansion, it looks like they will have to deal with it, as here is how the new bracket will eventually look.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports would post a picture of how the new bracket will look with an extended 76 teams, which now also includes an “Opening Round” involving the at-large and automatic qualifier programs based on seeding.

There is no doubt that this will be a polarizing decision by the NCAA to uptick the number of teams in the tournament from 68 to 76 teams, a vote that was unanimously approved on Thursday. This will be a reality, barring “forthcoming approval from other necessary committees,” according to CBS Sports.

The NCAA believes the change is “incredibly meaningful”

While the talks of a March Madness expansion could be deemed polarizing, some do consider it an unpopular stance on making the national tourney that much better. This will take effect in 2027 with the men’s and women’s brackets, with the change being “incredibly meaningful,” as stated by NCAA Board of Governors Chair and ACC commissioner Jim Phillips.

“Providing additional access to the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships for Division I programs will be incredibly meaningful, especially to the student-athletes of the eight additional men’s and women’s programs that receive these coveted bids,” Phillips said Thursday. “The leadership by President Charlie Baker, as well as Dan Gavitt, Lynn Holzman, and Joan Scott, has been outstanding. We also appreciate the support of our broadcast partners and corporate champions and partners in making this a reality.”

While the expansion does give more teams to compete in the dance, some could argue that it takes away that same competition and makes the regular season less meaningful. At any rate, it remains to be seen how the discourse will be around the 76-team expansion, now that it won’t be a mere talking point, but rather a reality for next season.
