What Chris Finch said about Bulls’ shocking decision to pass on Timberwolves GM
The Chicago Bulls’ decision to pass on Matt Lloyd for their executive vice president of basketball operations role drew attention across the league, including from Chris Finch of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Speaking prior to Minnesota’s 104-102 Game 1 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night, Finch addressed the Bulls’ hiring decision in comments to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic. While he praised Chicago’s selection of Bryson Graham, Finch made it clear he holds Lloyd in extremely high regard.
“Congrats to Bryson Graham. I worked with Bryson in New Orleans for a number of years. He’s a class act and an outstanding talent evaluator. I’m sure he will be a great pick for the Bulls.”
Finch then offered a strong endorsement of Lloyd, emphasizing his impact within the Timberwolves organization.
“Gunning for Matt. He’s one of the best executives I’ve ever worked with anywhere I’ve been. He’s an absolute rock star when it comes to that, from running processes to connecting with people in the building, to positivity to leadership, to being able to manage up and down. It’s only a matter of time until he gets his chance, I’m convinced of it. These are really hard jobs to get, highly coveted. Lots of things go into them. We’re fortunate to have him here and he’s been a huge part of our success.”
Bulls’ decision to pass on Matt Lloyd shocks Timberwolves
The decision surprised many around the league, particularly given Lloyd’s perceived momentum during the interview process. According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Lloyd was among several candidates who impressed during face-to-face presentations with Bulls leadership.
“A source very familiar with the situation reiterated that all of the candidates that made face-to-face presentations to the Bulls last week were impressive, and that included Lloyd. Graham just stood out with his plan to build out the front office from the ground up.”
Cowley reported that Lloyd was informed by Billy King, who was part of the hiring firm assisting the Bulls, that he would not receive the position. The outcome reportedly came as a surprise not only to Lloyd but also within the Timberwolves organization, where there was a strong belief he had emerged as a leading candidate.
Minnesota now turns its focus back to the playoffs, holding a 1-0 series lead after its narrow Game 1 victory. The Timberwolves will look to extend that advantage in Game 2 on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. PT on ESPN before the series shifts to Target Center.
With aspirations of reaching a third consecutive Western Conference Finals, the Timberwolves continue to lean on a front office and coaching staff that Finch made clear he values highly.
