‘Doesn’t make sense’ – West Ham warned they’re making transfer ‘mistake’

West Ham are making a ‘mistake’ by selling Freddie Potts, according to former Hammers star Kevin Nolan.

talkSPORT understands that Potts has been granted permission to travel to Belgium to undergo a medical ahead of a £10million move to Belgian side Club Brugge.

The midfielder was expected to play a key role for West Ham in the coming Championship campaign as the Hammers seek an immediate Premier League return.

And yet, Potts is now set to leave the London Stadium, ending a 17-year association with the east London outfit.

Nolan, who spent four years on the West Ham books, revealed to Alex Crook on talkSPORT on Monday that he is ‘surprised’ that the capital side are cashing in on the 22-year-old.

“I think this probably could turn out to be a bit of a mistake, but it’s good money for Freddie,” Nolan said.

“I think it’s a great move for Freddie to go to Club Brugge and be able to play in Europe, and play the style he wants.

“I’m quite surprised that this has been allowed to happen, if I’m honest.

“I thought that he could be one of the players who could stand up this year for West Ham.

“It doesn’t make sense to me, but I wish Freddie all the luck because he’s a great kid, lovely family, and I’m sure he’ll go and be successful over there.”

‘I don’t get it’

Nolan’s comments on Potts echo Tony Cottee’s words on the player’s impending exit.

Former Hammers striker Cottee joined Jeff Stelling and Andy Townsend on talkSPORT Breakfast where he admitted his disappointment at seeing the 22-year-old go.

“I don’t get it. Freddie Potts, I don’t know I might be a bit biased,” he said.

“I played with his dad and I want to see the academy players. I don’t get it, £10million to Brugge, I think they’re talking about.

“When he played in the Championship two seasons ago, he was Player of the Year for Portsmouth, he was the Player of the Year for Wycombe in League One and we’re getting rid of a good young academy player.

“It doesn’t make sense to me at all. Alright, £10million, you could argue that the club needs a bit of money to pay the bills.

“I get that at the moment, but in the grand scale of things, you’ve got to keep your good academy boys.

“West Ham might have raised well over £200million by the time the season starts.

“At which point, why are you selling an academy player for £10million? I don’t get that one.”
