Kelsey Plum set to make Mercury debut vs Sky after blockbuster trade

Kelsey Plum will make her Phoenix Mercury debut against the Chicago Sky on Monday. The news comes after the Mercury made a blockbuster trade for Plum hours before the WNBA trade deadline.

It was only one of two deals done at the deadline across the league. With the amount of shock this brings to the league, it can be what Phoenix needs.

They’re on the outside looking in for a playoff spot, and Plum’s immediate impact could make that spot a reality. She’s averaging a career-high 23.9 points and 6.4 assists while shooting 53% from the field and 38% from deep.

The WNBA community is buzzing, but so is the team itself. During Monday’s shootaround, Kahleah Copper was excited for Plum to join the Mercury.

Those two, along with Alyssa Thomas, were a part of the 2024 USA Women’s Basketball Olympic Team that secured a Gold Medal.

Granted, it’s been two years since the trio joined forces, but there is already chemistry with Copper and Thomas. Inserting Plum into that mix won’t take long, but the fit will have to be quick and seamless if they want a chance to compete deep into the season.

The first chance to do that will be on Monday against the Sky. For the latter, they’re coming off an emotional game highlighted by a Sydney Taylor game-winning shot.

On the flip side, the Mercury had an underwhelming loss to the New York Liberty. Perhaps the start of the Kelsey Plum era can begin with a win.
