What Carlos Mendoza said after Mets-Cubs David Peterson trade

The New York Mets traded David Peterson to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. In all reality, the trade made sense. Peterson has struggled and is clearly in need of a fresh start, while the Cubs’ pitching has been decimated by injuries and they were in need of a hurler. Nevertheless, Peterson had pitched in New York since 2020 and he will be missed by many in the clubhouse. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was asked about the Peterson trade before Thursday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, via SNY Mets.

“It’s a tough one… Obviously you understand this is a business,” Mendoza said. “But, especially from my end, I had a really good relationship with (Peterson). This is a guy who will come in the office and have coffee and just talk about life. We’ve been together since I took the job, we’ve been through the ups and downs… It got to a point where we needed the flexibility on the roster.

“… There was an opportunity to make a deal and we move forward.”

The southpaw will be missed, but this trade is probably the best thing for him. He was an All-Star in 2025 and Peterson still features the potential to make an impact. It would not be surprising to see him bounce back with the Cubs.

The left-hander has turned in a 6.09 ERA across 16 total appearances (eight starts) so far in 2026. While his struggles have been undeniable, the Cubs desperately need pitching help. They are obviously hoping that Peterson will get back on track. Meanwhile, as Mendoza said, the Mets will move forward after trading Peterson.
