Watch Dave Roberts address Dodgers, Mets players on Jackie Robinson Day

As the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets prepare for the finale of their three-game series on Jackie Robinson Day, Dave Roberts addressed the players who gathered around the No. 42 statue outside of Blue Heaven.

Taking the microphone to talk about Robinson’s impact on the game, Roberts reminded the assembled players what he fought for almost 80 years ago and the impact his fight has had on the world today.

“My guys, thank you for being out here. And it was almost 80 years since Jackie broke the color barrier. And I think that I don’t want to take too much time,” Roberts said. “But what I do want to say is you look at New York, you look at Los Angeles, probably the two most diverse cities in the world. And Jackie would look back and be very proud that, you know, the guys that are suiting up tonight reflect his dream, his vision on what equality, unity would look like.”

Roberts then asked his players for a simple favor: to remember what Robinson fought for and bring that same level of enthusiasm to the field every time they suit up.

“My ask is that we remember how we got here. And I think that’s the main thing,” Roberts declared. “And it’s one thing to appreciate where we’re at, the fruits of all that we have, we’re all the beneficiaries of what Jackie did and sacrificed. And so I say that in going out there tonight and play with that enthusiasm that Jackie wanted and played for every single day.”

While things weren’t easy for Robinson during his playing career, he ultimately won the fight definitively, with Major League Baseball one of the most diverse sports thanks to its ever-expanding international reach. As players now prepare to honor Robinson’s legacy by universally wearing No. 42 on April 15, hopefully the Dodgers and Mets heed Roberts’ words and play with that same level of enthusiasm in their season finale.
