Watch Alex Ovechkin skate off the ice for the last time in 2025-26

The Washington Capitals ended their 2025-26 NHL season on a high note, beating the Columbus Blue Jackets on the road Tuesday night, 2-1, in what could also be the final game of Alex Ovechkin’s legendary career.

Right after the contest, Ovechkin celebrated with his Capitals teammates and acknowledged the throng of Washington fans who traveled to Nationwide Arena in Columbus to show support for their team and catch perhaps The Great Eight’s final NHL game.

The Capitals failed to make the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, leaving a big question about whether hockey fans had already seen the last of Ovechkin in the NHL.

The three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner previously said he would take time to decide on his future, which may come in the summer.

“I’m going to stay a little bit in D.C. I don’t know when we’re going to fly (back to Russia). … I’ll talk with Carbs (coach Spencer Carbery), CP (general manager Chris Patrick), my family and go from there,” Ovechkin said during his 3-minute postgame remarks,” Ovechkin said after the game (h/t Joe Reedy of the Associated Press).

Ovechkin has accomplished virtually everything there is to achieve in the league. Apart from his MVP awards, he is a nine-time Maurice Richard Trophy winner and the most prolific goalscorer in NHL history. He is the only player ever to score at least 900 goals, and if the Blue Jackets game was the last of his career, he ends it with 929 goals and 758 assists.

And then there is, of course, his Stanley Cup title with the Caps in 2018, which ended the long and painful journey through several playoff heartbreaks by Ovechkin and the Capitals.

Washington fans surely would love to see him return for at least one more season, but all they can do for now is to wait.
