Warriors rumors: Al Horford among players who would be gone if Steve Kerr resigns

The Golden State Warriors saw their season come to an end with a 111-96 loss against the Phoenix Suns in the play-in. While noone expected the Warriors especially in the absence of Jimmy Butler to make a deep run this year, the game may as well prove to be the last one for several major personalities at the organization.

Chief among them is Steve Kerr, with ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel recently stating that several other players may follow him through the exit door.

“With Steve Kerr potentially be gone, will he be traded? That’s a big question mark,” he said about Draymond Green, before going in detail about stars such as Al Horford and Gary Payton.

“Al Horford has that player option, if Steve Kerr is not the head coach, and they go in a different direction with a younger guy, Al Horford would not be there I can say that with certainty.

De’Anthony Melton, he has got that player option, he is going to opt out, and he is not going to get the money from the Warriors if Steve Kerr is not the head coach. Gary Payton is a guy who who Steve Kerr has loved through the years, would he be back after signing a minimum contract this year? So lots of moving pieces that can be in line here if Steve Kerr does not stay with the Warriors,” Siegel concluded.

Kerr has been the Warriors HC since 2016, winning four championships while building a dynasty alongside stars such as Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. And as Golden State goes about building another team around Curry that can compete, it may inadvertently lead to a major shakedown.

“I hope he’s our coach next year. You want my opinion? I think not, just because it just feels like that, it felt like that was it,” Green had said.

The Warriors veteran also claimed that both him and Steph thought the Clippers game “could be our last time playing with Steve.” The same was also suggested by Kerr himself, per Sports Illustrated.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen. I still love coaching. But I get. These jobs all have an expiration date,” he had claimed.

In such a situation, it is plausible to think that multiple other stars will follow the exit door. And if Green is on that list, it will not be a huge surprise to see anyone other than Curry himself on it.
