Michigan QB Bryce Underwood reveals mindset on final-second Hail Mary vs. Western Michigan

Bryce Underwood pulled off incredible heroics with his game-winning Hail Mary touchdown in the No. 16 Michigan Wolverines’ 13-12 win over the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday night.

Underwood is going through his second year as the Wolverines’ full-time starter. He led Michigan to a 9-4 record in Year 1, getting firm trust in his talents as a quarterback for the program.

Western Michigan put its in-state rival to the limit. They went down to the wire, seeing the Broncos on brink of pulling off a historic victory. However, a call went against them as referees added more time on the clock, paving the way for Underwood’s game-winning touchdown pass. He reflected on the highlight after the game, believing in his fellow teammate JJ Buchanan to make the catch.

“The thought was give my guys an opportunity, and that’s what I did,” Underwood told reporters after the game, via Big Ten Network. “Excitement, we built a lot of trust over the last eight or nine months. So, I gave him an opportunity and he made the play.”

How Bryce Underwood, Michigan played against WMU

Bryce Underwood proved himself in the most unique circumstances, pulling off game-winning heroics with a chaotic victory for No. 16 Michigan.

Western Michigan remarkably competed well against the Wolverines. They only trailed 7-6 at halftime then stunned many by taking a 12-7 lead in the fourth quarter. The Broncos were seconds away from making history before the Wolverines snatched it away from them.

Underwood filled the stat sheet in the air and on the ground. He finished with 12 out of 22 completions for 170 yards and a touchdown and an interception while racking up nine rushes for 47 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, JJ Buchanan was the receiver of the night with six catches for 126 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

The No. 16 Wolverines will look forward to their next matchup, remaining at home. They host the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners in Week 2 on Sept. 12.
