Viktor Hovland wins Travelers Championship playoff over Scottie Scheffler

Viktor Hovland has won the Travelers Championship in a playoff over Scottie Scheffler. In a sudden-death playoff, Hovland poured in a birdie, while Scheffler missed his birdie try. This is Hovland’s eighth career PGA Tour win and his first of the 2026 season.

On the 18th hole on Sunday, Scheffler made a 8’8″ putt to force this playoff. He did it after an incredible second shot from the rough, but he was able to find the fairway in the playoff hole. Both players stuck it close from the fairway, and the putters made the difference. Hovland poured in the winner from 6’7″, while Scheffler missed from 2’4″.

The Travelers Championship went into a rain delay on Sunday evening with Scheffler leading by one shot. Hovland made two birdies after the delay, while Scheffler made a string of pars, to force a playoff. The Travelers Championship has now gone to eight playoffs since 2007, with Scheffler winning the most recent one in 2024.

An incredible fan atmosphere, filled with Norwegian fans and the traditional Travelers crowd, highlighted an epic duel down the stretch on Sunday. Both the Connecticut fans and the Norwegians were out on Monday morning as well. Erling Haaland’s squad plays on Tuesday in Dallas, so it will be a quick transition for the Europeans.

This is the final PGA Tour Signature Event of the season, so all eyes head to England for The Open Championship. Royal Birkdale will serve as the host of the final major for the first time since Jordan Spieth’s triumph in 2017. This could be the first season since 2023 with four unique major champions. But Rory McIlroy, Wyndham Clark, and Aaron Rai will have a say in that.

Scheffler will be defending his Open Championship win, while Hovland takes another shot at his first major championship.
