Viktor Hovland beats Scottie Scheffler in playoff to win Travelers Championship
The 73rd hole proved prosperous for Viktor Hovland.
The Travelers Championship went to a playoff that had to wait until Monday morning to get going, but Viktor Hovland did not have to wait long into it for his eighth career victory on the PGA Tour. The Norwegian, with plenty of Norway fans in attendance, made a 10.5-foot putt for birdie that wound up being the decider to help him take home the final Signature Event of the season.
Hovland’s birdie putt felt like a must-make when he walked up to it because his opponent, world number one Scottie Scheffler, had stuck his approach to three feet. The entire world assumed what Viktor did: Make it just to push this thing further out.
Following Hovland’s euphoric drain, Scheffler struck his putt a bit too hard and missed the cup which handed Hovland the win. Those are the breaks.
As noted the Signature Events are now done for the PGA Tour season and only the Open Championship remains as far as the majors are concerned. Obviously the playoffs and Tour Championship are still on the horizon, but it feels like we blinked and so much golf went by.
Congratulations to Viktor Hovland on win number eight!
