Victor Wembanyama’s 35-point playoff debut leads Spurs to Game 1 win
It was just another day in the office for Victor Wembanyama as he led the San Antonio Spurs to a convincing win over the Portland Trail Blazers, 111-98, in Game 1 of their first-round matchup in the playoffs at Frost Bank Center.
Wembanyama was unfazed in his postseason debut, exploding for 35 points on 13-of-21 shooting, including 5-of-6 from three-point territory. He added five rebounds and two blocks.
He totally outplayed the frontline of the Trail Blazers, who looked hapless against the two-time All-Star.
Stephon Castle logged 17 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, while De’Aaron Fox chipped in 17 points, five rebounds, and eight assists.
Wembanyama already scoffed at the negative view about the Spurs’ lack of experience in the playoffs. The team ended its six-year absence in the postseason after tallying a 62-20 record, gaining the second seed in the Western Conference.
The Spurs shot 48% from the field in Game 1, including 15-of-33 from three-point range. They led by as much as 21 points.
San Antonio got an extra boost from the fans, who made Frost Bank Center a colorful venue.
Game 2 is on Tuesday.
