USMNT rumors: What Thierry Henry previously said about manager job amid speculation

With uncertainty surrounding Mauricio Pochettino’s long-term future as USMNT head coach, speculation has already begun about who could replace him if U.S. Soccer is forced to make a change.

One intriguing name that continues to surface is Arsenal legend and former France international Thierry Henry. While Henry hasn’t publicly campaigned for the job, he made it clear in a previous interview that coaching the United States is something he would seriously consider.

According to ESPN’s Lizzy Becherano, when asked a couple of years ago if he would want the USMNT head coach position, Henry was clear: “Do I know the players? Yeah, I know the players. Do I know the league? Yeah, I know the league. It’s a different ballgame, I cannot talk about it now like that, but would I want to be a manager at any level? Yes, of course. That’s one of the things I’d like to do.”

Since that quote, he has remained deeply involved in the sport, working as one of the top television analysts covering both the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League for American audiences. Week after week, Henry studies tactics, evaluates players, and breaks down matches with the same elite soccer IQ that made him one of the greatest forwards of his generation.

Henry also has coaching experience. He previously managed AS Monaco in Ligue 1, CF Montréal in MLS, and led France’s Under-21 and Olympic teams. While his stint at Monaco was short-lived, his work with France’s young talent earned praise, particularly during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where his squad won a silver medal.
