Twins turn back clock to 1994 with Red Sox sweep

For over two decades, the Minnesota Twins have failed to get three straight wins against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. But after their most recent series, Minnesota has bucked their trend.

With a 6-5 victory on Sunday, the Twins officially swept the Red Sox. It’s the first time Minnesota has recorded a three-game away sweep of Boston since 1994, via Bobby Nightengale Jr of the Minnesota Star Tribune.

The Twins opened up the scoring via an error, but the Red Sox answered right back with a Masataka Yoshida home run. Both teams would trade blows through the fourth inning, where Boston took a 4-3 lead by a Marcelo Mayer RBI single.

But Minnesota wasn’t going to back down. In the top of the sixth inning, Austin Martin tied the game with a double. Then, Brooks Lee drove in a pair of go-ahead runs with a single. While the Red Sox would get a run back, a smooth defensive play by the Twins would secure the victory.

Their latest victory comes after the Twins earned an 8-6 victory in the first game and 4-2 win in the second. Minnesota has won four-straight games and six out of their last seven.

Still, at 26-27, the Twins know there is still room for vast improvement. Mainly in the pitching department, as they rank 19th with a 4.19 ERA. But with Minnesota ranking seventh in runs scored (248), they’ve proven to be a more difficult matchup than opposing teams may have expected.

When the trade deadline rolls around, the Twins may still be viewed as sellers. But over their three-game series against Boston, they looked like the best versions of themselves.
