Troy Aikman facing backlash over conflict of interest that has become ‘problem’ NFL can’t ignore
Troy Aikman wants to stick around with the Miami Dolphins, and that could cause a big problem.
A three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback with the Dallas Cowboys, Aikman joined the Fins’ front office as a consultant in January, to assist with their head coach and general manager search.

Miami wanted a voice outside of the organization, with connections across the NFL, to weigh in on their GM hire after parting ways with Chris Grier in October 2025.
The team landed on Hall of Famer Aikman, who in retirement has become ESPN’s top Monday Night Football analyst.
Both a new GM and new HC were hired in January, with Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley taking the roles in Miami.
While it seems Aikman has fulfilled his consultancy duty, he’s keen to continue working with the Dolphins in some capacity — which according to one NFL insider, raises a conflict of interest.
Is conflict of interest brewing for Tory Aikman in Miami?
“This year, the Dolphins reached out to me and asked if I would help them in their GM search and head coaching search,” Aikman told the Rodeo Time podcast last week.
“Kinda caught me out of left field, I wasn’t expecting that. But I dove into it, decided I would do it and thoroughly enjoyed it.
“Felt like I was of some help and where that might go I’m not sure. I’m gonna continue to work with them in some capacity and that’s kind of scratched whatever itch I had when it came to being in the front office.”
Aikman, of course, is not the only NFL announcer to be involved with a franchise in an official capacity.
Tom Brady owns a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders, and has balanced that role alongside his work as FOX’s $375 million commentator.
His ownership caused quite the stir across both the 2024 and 2025 seasons, with question marks over the access he gets to other teams’ players and coaches as a broadcaster.

Some ‘Brady Rules’ were initially introduced for the seven-time Super Bowl champion, but those were later relaxed.
NFL insider Mike Florio, though, believes Aikman has the same conflict of interest with ESPN and the Dolphins — and that he should face similar ‘limitations’ if his work continues.
Troy Aikman and Tom Brady are ‘problem that shouldn’t be ignored’
“There was a time when a plan like that would have raised eyebrows — especially if/when Aikman’s primary job on Monday Night Football includes a Dolphins game,” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk.
“But with Tom Brady’s dual role as FOX broadcaster and Raiders minority owner normalizing conflicts of interest that previously wouldn’t have been allowed, well, when in Rome.
“Still, Brady has limitations on his ability to enter facilities and attend practices. Whether those same rules will apply to Aikman isn’t known.
“If, however, he’ll be working for the Dolphins, it would make sense for the league to draw lines as to where he can and can’t go as it relates to the other 31 teams.

“Plenty of people have hobbies and/or side hustles. When an NFL broadcaster moonlights as a paid consultant or employee of one of the league’s teams, it’s a problem that shouldn’t be ignored.
“Thanks to Brady’s insistence on wearing two hats, the line hasn’t simply been blurred… It’s apparently been obliterated.”
Aikman has been one of the NFL’s top broadcasters for over two decades, and has already called six Super Bowls.
He is set to be in the booth, alongside Joe Buck, for his seventh come February 2027.
