Trevor Story breaks silence on Red Sox’s shortstop trade rumors before deadline

The Boston Red Sox are the hottest team on the planet and made a huge addition at the MLB trade deadline. Adley Rutschman has arrived to bolster their offense as a catcher, but they were looking for more. Injured Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story saw the rumors about the team looking for a new shortstop. He spoke with MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo about the rumors.

“There was speculation, for sure. I saw it,” Story said. “But that’s the business side of (the game). I can’t really control that, especially when I’m not playing. It unfolded how it did. Obviously, I’m happy about that and excited to get back in there, be part of this and contribute all I can to this incredible turnaround.”

“I see them,” Story said of the rumors. “I wouldn’t say they (irritate) me, but I keep note, for sure.”

Story has been out since May 14 after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia. Andruw Monasterio has been the primary shortstop as of late and has a solid .775 OPS on the season. But with the New York Yankees dealing with injuries and the Tampa Bay Rays in sight, the Red Sox were looking for another impactful bat.

No shortstops of consequence were traded during the MLB trade deadline. The Yankees called up their top prospect, George Lombard Jr, to add juice to the position. The Rays also added a catcher, bringing in Liam Hicks from the Marlins. So the Red Sox did not lose anything to their rivals in the division race. They are blistering hot and have a place for Story when he returns to the lineup.

The Red Sox are 32-8 in their last 40 games, picking up seven games on the Rays and 13.5 games on the Yankees in that stretch. They are hosting the White Sox for three games before welcoming the Athletics.
