Tottenham climb out of relegation zone as furious Aston Villa fans leave stadium early

Tottenham Hotspur have ended a nine-month wait with a crucial away win over Aston Villa.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side lifted themselves out of the Premier League bottom three by winning 2-1 at Villa Park on Sunday.

Spurs took full advantage of West Ham’s defeat at Brentford on Saturday as they moved a step closer to preserving their top-flight status.

In doing so, the north London club have won consecutive league matches for the first time since August.

The visitors made a dream start against their lacklustre opponents, who made seven changes from their Europa League defeat with Nottingham Forest on Thursday.

Conor Gallagher opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a perfectly placed strike from the edge of the box.

It marked the midfielder’s first goal for Spurs since his January arrival from Atletico Madrid.

Spurs then doubled their lead later in the first half through Richarlison’s header from a cross on the right.

The home side failed to register a single shot on goal during the opening 45 minutes.

It is only the second time Villa have done so in the Premier League under Emery.

In their 69th league outings under the Spaniard, only the goalless draw with Newcastle on the opening weekend of this season saw them repeat the unwanted feat.

Villa’s toothless performance saw them booed off by the home fans at half time.

Their display failed to improve after the break as Spurs cruised to a much-needed victory, with Emi Buendia’s consolation header in the final seconds of the match doing nothing to lift spirits.

As a result, hundreds of home supporters streamed out of Villa Park prior to the final whistle.

Those that did remain made their feelings known with further boos heard at full time.

Following their win over Wolves last week, they have now won back-to-back league matches for the first time since the opening two weeks of the season.

On that occasion, Spurs followed a home victory over Burnley up by beating Manchester City away from home.

Their latest triumph has also lifted the Europa League holders out of the relegation zone.

With three matches remaining, Spurs sit one point ahead of West Ham.

They could find themselves back in the bottom three by the next time they play, though.

The Hammers are in action before their relegation rivals next weekend as they host Arsenal on Sunday.
