Tom Holland reveals ‘very uncomfortable’ dilemma The Odyssey caused with Spider-Man: Brand New Day

July will be a busy month for Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland, who will be promoting his fourth solo MCU movie and Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey.

However, this almost didn’t happen. In GQ’s cover story on The Odyssey, Holland revealed that when first offered a role in The Odyssey by Nolan, the filming dates were “identical” to Brand New Day. This caused a dilemma, as he wanted to do both projects. So, he called the Oscar-winning director to reason that if he accepted the role as Telemachus, it would cause a “very uncomfortable conversation.”

“So I said to Chris, like, ‘Look, I want to do this movie, but if I’m going to do it, I’m going to have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation,’” Holland said.

He spoke to Sony Pictures’ Tom Rothman to make his plea. Out of “respect” for Holland and Nolan, they agreed to “push” Brand New Day’s production. Holland gave his two cents on why they allowed it to happen. If it weren’t for Nolan’s reputation, it might not have worked.

“I think one of the reasons why Sony were happy to move is because Chris has that reputation of ‘This movie isn’t going to go five months over, and we aren’t actually going to lose Tom for two years,’ ” Holland speculated. “Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation.”

The Odyssey will kick start Holland’s summer, and it will be released on July 17. Two weeks later, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will swing into theaters.

These are Holland’s first movies in four years. He last starred in Sony’s Uncharted movie with Mark Wahlberg in 2022. In between his film projects, he starred in Apple TV’s The Crowded Room, which premiered on June 9, 2023.
