Tigers’ Tarik Skubal pumps breaks on optimistic injury timeline after second bullpen
As Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal has been throwing bullpen sessions in order to return from a surgery to remove loose bodies, there have been reports saying that he could return sooner rather than later. While fans await a return timeline for the Tigers pitcher in Skubal, the star would clear the air on coming back as soon as next week.
According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, Skubal would ‘debunk’ the idea of returning next week. Skubal would also go into how the rehab process has very little precedent with coming off the surgery to remove the aforementioned loose bodies.
“If you’re not in those conversations, I wouldn’t trust anything you see…I want to be back as fast as I can, too. What’s going on right now is kind of unprecedented. I don’t know in the history of the game if there’s been a surgery 15 days ago, and I’m throwing a one-inning hypothetical start. I don’t know if that’s ever really been done before. So I get it. I want to be back as fast as possible. I also want to be healthy,” Skubal said.
Tigers’ Tarik Skubal on next steps
Skubal would continue to discuss finding the balance of not wanting to risk further re-injury with the Tigers, but also ‘pushing the threshold’ to return as fast as possible, while not impacting his future health. While there is no set plan at the moment. Skubal said he expects a rehab simulated game, as “there will be a volume I need to get up.”
“But it is kind of day by day. It is how I feel and how I bounce back. Tomorrow, how I wake up, how I feel is going to be important. I anticipate it’s going to be really well because I feel great right now. So that’s a long-winded answer. There’s going to be speculation. I have other opinions on that. I could keep going, but I won’t,” Skubal said.
It remains to be seen when Skubal returns to the team, as so far this season, he’s pitched a 2.70 ERA with 45 strikeouts and a 3-2 record.
