Tigers’ Tarik Skubal gets brutally honest on trade rumors amid injury rehab

The Detroit Tigers are mired in a tough season, and trade rumors surround team ace Tarik Skubal. Skubal is responding to all the news stories that he might get dealt soon from Detroit.

“With all the trade stuff, we just got to start winning games,” Skubal said, per the Detroit Free Press. “Last year, there was not one word about me being traded. Winning calms all that stuff down, and that’s what this team needs to do.”

The latest team mentioned as a possible trade suitor for Skubal is the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays are looking for some rotation help, as they contend for an American League East crown this season. Major League Baseball insiders Ken Rosenthal and Mark Feinsand both see the Rays as a possible trade partner.

Other teams mentioned as possible destinations for Skubal include the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees. Time will tell if Skubal does indeed get traded.

“Every contender will at least check in — yes, even the spendaholic, back-to-back World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, who might view the deadline as something close to last call. The next collective bargaining agreement will include either a salary cap, closing the sport’s Free Spending Saloon, or other payroll restrictions that would have a similarly sobering effect,” Ken Rosenthal wrote for The Athletic.

The hurler is one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. Although he has been bothered by an injury this year, Skubal has a 2.70 ERA on the season. Skubal also has three victories.

The Tigers star has won the American League Cy Young award the last two seasons. He has been named an All-Star in each of those seasons. Skubal was also the American League wins leader in 2024.

The Tigers are last in the American League Central, heading into Tuesday. Detroit holds a 23-38 record. Detroit has a game with Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
