49ers give Brandon Aiyuk’s number to another WR

The drama between Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers continues to rage on. This latest event marks another instance of their lack of connection in past years.

Aiyuk has been in the NFL since 2020, initially rising as their top receiver in 2022 and 2023. However, injuries altered his trajectory as he was absent for the entire 2025 campaign.

San Francisco voided the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract extension due to his lack of participation. This only deepened the wedge between both parties, ultimately wounding up in a tough situation.

The 49ers seem to be set on moving on from Aiyuk, even taking away his jersey number. The No. 11 jersey is now on Demarcus Robinson, who has been with the team since last season after a two-year stint with the Los Angeles Rams.

What lies ahead for 49ers this season amid Brandon Aiyuk drama

The 49ers want to be back in Super Bowl contention with a relatively healthy campaign. However, their situation with Brandon Aiyuk remains ongoing until they come to a final decision with the receiver.

Aiyuk last played in the 2024 campaign, making 25 catches for 374 yards before going down with season-ending injuries after seven games. He has yet to return in any games with his absence from the team, falling from his peak in 2023 where he caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.

The 49ers will attempt to improve upon their 12-5 record from the previous season. They also intend to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season and reclaim the NFC West title.

San Francisco’s regular season will get underway at the international level. They head over to Australia as they take on the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET.
