Thunder’s Jared McCain opens up on SGA’s meaningful off-court gesture
This Oklahoma City Thunder team must have expected themselves to be back in the NBA Finals to get an opportunity to defend their title, but there will be no repeat champion after the San Antonio Spurs took care of business in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, 111-103. OKC simply did not have enough firepower to keep up, especially after losing Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell to injuries when it mattered the most.
Injuries to Williams and Mitchell thrust Jared McCain into action for the Thunder, and McCain, for his part, did well. It took him some time to integrate himself within the fabric of the Thunder squad, but he has since become an invaluable and beloved member of the team.
In fact, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the team’s undisputed best player, wanted to help McCain feel more comfortable and looked after him by taking him shopping on a trip to New York.
“Little things like that mean so much to a young player,” McCain said, per Brandon Rahbar of Daily Thunder.
Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the best dressed players in the NBA, and McCain is never shy to show off his personality — whether through his Tiktok videos or with the color of his nail polish. It was easy to envision McCain blend in well in the Thunder locker room, and this story of his just proves that his new team went out of its way to try and make him feel more comfortable.
McCain paid that belief off with excellent performances in the playoffs, including in the WCF against the Spurs. He averaged 13.1 points per game in the WCF, and he even earned himself a promotion to the starting lineup for Games 5 and 6 of the series.
Only 22 years of age, McCain has a bright future ahead of him with the Thunder, and he’ll surely be an integral part of the rotation moving forward.
