The Rams executive with Falcons ties interviewing for Vikings GM vacancy
The Minnesota Vikings are conducting a thorough search for a new general manager after electing to wait until after the 2026 NFL Draft to hire one. With several candidates in the mix, the club is seemingly eyeing a Los Angeles Rams executive who has a history with the Atlanta Falcons.
John McKay, who is currently the assistant general manager of the Rams, is interviewing for the GM job in Minnesota, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. McKay is entering his 10th season with the Rams and is the son of longtime Falcons executive Rich McKay.
“The Vikings requested an interview with Rams assistant general manager John McKay for their GM job, per source,” reported Pelissero. “McKay — son of longtime NFL exec Rich McKay and grandson of the late coach John McKay — is in his 10th season in L.A., where he worked with Kevin O’Connell.”
John McKay’s family has been involved with the NFL for decades. His father was the general manager for the Falcons from 2003 to 2008. He then took on the President and CEO roles from 2008 to 2025. Additionally, McKay’s grandfather, who is also named John, served as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach from 1976 to 1984.
His connection with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell seems like a match made in heaven. Teamed up with O’Connell, McKay could have a chance to do what Les Snead does for Sean McVay. And that’s building annual contenders year in and year out. Having a general manager and head coach who align on decisions can make a world of difference for any sports franchise.
