The New England Patriots are again Super Bowl dreaming after the recent trade. And the team’s fans are starstruck. Also, there is a history for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels that predicts a monster season for AJ Brown after the trade, according to a post on X by Adam Schefter.

Perhaps that is cherry picking for Schefter. Three of the receivers on that list are from 17 or more years ago. What about any wide receiver acquisitions that didn’t have great seasons? Most notably, Stefon Diggs last season. He totaled 1,013 yards but scored only four touchdowns.

And if you say Diggs isn’t in the same conversation with Brown, is Schefter’s post limited to superstar receivers? If so, what offensive coordinator wouldn’t have a good track record with those guys?

Will Patriots AJ Brown thrive under Josh McDaniels?

The best thing in Brown’s favor is that he’s not too old. Yes, he’s pushing it. He will turn 29 this month. But there’s reason to believe he still has good years left in the league, according to ESPN.

“A.J. can still play,” said former Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon, who currently is a SiriusXM NFL Radio host. “He would give the Patriots a legit, bona fide No. 1 wide receiver and a person in that room who can be a leader. Having the experience of playing under (Mike Vrabel), he can also be a good purveyor of the message and (teach) everyone else in the room what he is looking for.”

Brown is a big target at 6-foot-1 and 226 pounds. That will help young quarterback Drake Maye as he continues his climb toward NFL superstardom.

The big question is Brown’s motivation.

“When motivated, A.J. Brown is still a higher-level wideout in the league,” said Greg Cosell, the NFL Films and ESPN “NFL Matchup” analyst. “He’s as physical as they come. He can work between the numbers as well as any receiver in the game because of his size, hands, competitiveness, and ability to catch through contact.

“While he is not a burner by any means, he does have a great feel for attacking corners’ leverage and blind spots, and therefore, at times, can be a vertical dimension.”
