The hidden $1.1 million cost of Clippers’ 6-team John Collins trade to Pistons
The Los Angeles Clippers are in the middle of yet another issue as the seemingly perpetual curse on the team continues. The Clippers’ trade with the Toronto Raptors centered around Kawhi Leonard was put on hold due to the ongoing investigation regarding the Clippers’ and Leonard’s alleged ties with a now-defunct company.
Los Angeles was ready to part ways with the two-time Finals MVP, but there is a possibility that he could return, throwing a monkey wrench into the team’s vision.
The Clippers have been busy in the offseason, including pulling off a complicated six-team trade that sent John Collins to the Detroit Pistons. In return, Los Angeles received a second-round pick in 2028.
NBA insider Marc Stein noted a hidden cost for the Clippers in dealing Collins.
“League sources say that the Clippers, as part of last week’s six-team trade that landed John Collins with Detroit, also agreed to convey $1.1 million in cash to Milwaukee (Bucks),” wrote Stein on his Substack.
The Bucks gave up Taurean Prince and Gary Harris to the Pistons.
Also part of the multi-team deal were the Dallas Mavericks, the Memphis Grizzlies, and the Washington Wizards.
Collins averaged 13.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in his lone season in Los Angeles.
The Clippers were banking on a retool, accepting that Leonard’s stint had run its course. Before the trade was paused, they were set to receive Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks.
Aside from shipping away Leonard and Collins, they acquired Rui Hachimura on a two-year, $28 million contract. Bradley Beal, meanwhile, declined his player option to become a free agent.
Stein said NBA commissioner Adam Silver is expected to address the Clippers’ deal with the Raptors on Tuesday.
