Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire takes major shot at Texas while announcing scheduling move

Texas Tech football appears to be reigniting a past rivalry with Texas without taking the field. Head coach Joey McGuire already visualized hoping his team faces the Longhorns in the 2026 postseason. The Red Raiders leader isn’t through dunking on the Longhorns, though.

McGuire is aiming to schedule a high-profile opponent for the 2027 and 2028 season. But the San Antonio Quarterback club meeting overheard this McGuire message.

“It won’t be Texas because they’re scared,” McGuire said, which got shared by CJ Vogel of On Texas Football.

McGuire finds himself in a back-and-forth exchange with Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian. “Coach Sark” called out the Red Raiders over scheduling.

“There’s a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they’ll probably make the CFP this year,” Sarkisian said, via On3 Sports back in May.

Sarkisian and Texas missed out on the 2025 College Football Playoffs, even after beating two representatives in Texas A&M and Oklahoma during Southeastern Conference play. Yet TTU earned this upper hand: Winning the Big 12, which still remains a Power Four conference. Except TTU didn’t last in the playoffs. Oregon blanked them 23-0 in the Orange Bowl.

Texas and Texas Tech last played each other in 2023, ending in a 57-7 onslaught won by the former. But that became the last time both faced each other as Big 12 foes. Texas eventually moved to the SEC in the summer of 2024, ending the annual showdown with the Red Raiders in the process.
