Texas Tech cracks analyst’s top 10 offenses, even without Brendan Sorsby

Texas Tech football has been in the news plenty this offseason, but not for the reasons it would want. After landing former Cincinnati star Brendan Sorsby in the transfer portal, the standout signal-caller was suspended and checked into rehab for his gambling addiction.

Sorsby initially got an injunction against the NCAA that would have allowed him to play for Texas Tech this season, but he and the Red Raiders mutually agreed to part ways after a lot of backlash came in. Sorsby initially planned to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, but after the league opted not to hold one, he is now preparing for the 2027 NFL Draft without a team to play for this fall.

Of course, losing Sorsby is a big blow for Texas Tech when you compare it to what the Red Radiers’ offense could have been this season. He is a big, talented athlete who would thrive with more talent around him than he had at Cincinnati in 2025.

However, there is still plenty of quality talent on this offense. On3 Sports college football analyst J.D. Pickell ranked Texas Tech as the No. 10 offense in the country coming into the season.

Will Hammond has played quarterback in spot duty for Texas Tech in each of the last two seasons, so he has shown that he has what it takes to man the offense if needed. He is coming off of a torn ACL last season but is expected to be ready for fall camp and should start in Sorsby’s place in Week 1.

If Hammond is healthy and ready to go, Texas Tech still has a lot of talent around him that should make it somewhat of a seamless transition. Cameron Dickey and J’Kobi Williams formed one of the best running back duos in all of college football last season, and both are back. Terrance Carter Jr. is a preseason candidate for the Mackey Award, and Coy Eakin and Micah Hudson form a talented duo at wide receiver on the outside.

As a result, it’s easy to see why there’s hype around this offense even without Sorsby.
