Tempo’s Sandy Brondello shares honest ‘no-brainer’ take on Nyara Sabally

Nyara Sabally had a memorable evening on Wednesday, as she led the Toronto Tempo against the Chicago Sky, 111-104, to notch their fourth win in their maiden season in the WNBA.

Sabally scored a career-high 29 points and added six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks in 28 minutes. She was efficient from the field, going 11-of-14, including 3-of-5 from the three-point line.

The Tempo went on an 8-2 run in the last 3:33 of the game to seal the victory and improve to 4-4.

In the postgame conference, coach Sandy Brondello was effusive in her praise of Sabally.

“We think of the world of Nyara. We drafted her in New York. She had that injury in that first year, but we knew she had potential, and it’s more about her just getting healthy,” said Brondello in a video posted by ESPN’s Kareem Copeland.

“We had that opportunity to get her in the expansion (draft). It was a no-brainer. I also saw that as an opportunity to show everyone what she’s capable of. It was more of a health thing, and not an ability thing.”

The 28-year-old Sabally was the fifth overall pick of the New York Liberty in 2022. She, however, did not pan out with the team, averaging just 3.9 points in 12.1 minutes, as she played behind Breanna Stewart and Leonie Fiebich.

Now, she has a fresh start with the Tempo, who selected her as the fourth overall pick in the expansion draft. The change of scenery has worked wonders for Sabally. In five games, she is averaging career-bests across the board: 9.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks.

“She’s healthy and confident. She’s an important player for us. She put so much work into it. She’s faced so much adversity. So when great things like this happen, it’s pretty special. She’s very humble. I love that about her,” added Brondello.

Toronto improved to 4-4 and will take on the Seattle Storm on Saturday.
