Tempo’s Marina Mabrey caps legendary 53-point game with perfect reaction
Marina Mabrey will never forget the night she just had. The Toronto Tempo star had a performance of historic proportions on Thursday, as she led her team to a 125-97 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Sparks.
In front of over 8,000 fans at Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto, Ontario, the 29-year-old Mabrey lit up the Sparks for 53 points. Her incredible start to the game set the tone for what became a record-tying showing for the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish star. Marina Mabrey scored 19 points in the first quarter and was simply unstoppable the rest of the way.
She shot 17-for-28 from the field and knocked down nine of her 18 attempts from behind the arc. Mabrey also added six rebounds and two assists, all in 32 minutes of play. She tied the league record for most points in a single game as well as most threes in a contest.
Even to her, it seemed unbelievable.
“To do it in the WNBA, it’s kind of like a dream come true,” Mabrey said during a postgame interview on the court.
Marina has always been a dangerous scorer, and her performance was the biggest proof of her elite ability to get buckets.
Interestingly enough, her scoring outburst came at the expense of her former team. The Sparks selected the New Jersey native in the second round (19th overall) of the 2019 WNBA Draft. Mabrey played his rookie season with Los Angeles, but averaged just 4,0 points per game in 31 games.
After a year with Los Angeles, she played for the Dallas Wings, Chicago Sky and Connecticut Sun before getting drafted by the Tempo via an expansion draft.
